Craig Hall is Operations Director at the SEO and digital marketing agency Glass Digital. Here, he shares a tour of the company's office, and explains why moving into an Adderstone Group building has been great for the business.
We moved out of our old office and into our new premises at Maling Court in Ouseburn back in August of 2018. It had become clear that we were quickly outgrowing our existing space, so we decided to look for a new office that would make a more suitable base for the foreseeable future. We needed somewhere that was going to allow us to continue to grow, and we also wanted to be able to put our own stamp on our new workplace.
We looked at a range of different spaces that didn't quite tick all of our boxes — then, when we came to look at the Adderstone premises, we knew it was going to be just right for us. We initially took over the second floor of the building, but we've quickly expanded to take over the first floor, too.
There were a number of factors that drew us to this office. Firstly, we knew we would be able to customise the space in a way that it would suit us perfectly. Plus, we really liked the idea of being based in Ouseburn, which is considered to be the creative quarter of Newcastle. We thought the location would really help to inspire our staff, as there are so many galleries, workshops, and similar businesses nearby, which has turned out to be the case. Plus, it doesn't hurt that we're right next to some fantastic bars that we can pop to for a quick after-work drink on a Friday!
We wanted the office to serve as a blank slate that we could then build on over time, so we had the walls painted white. But, being a young and creative company, we also wanted our office to be a fun and vibrant space, so we added different coloured desks and chairs for each department. This has helped to ensure the space doesn't look too plain. We also had an illuminated sign made, which we installed in our reception area, so there's absolutely no question of who works here!
Perhaps the biggest change we've made to the space since we moved in is that we've fitted a kitchen in a room that was previously unused. This has everything we need: a fridge, sink, dishwasher, and microwave. There was already a kitchen on the ground floor of the building, but that meant we all had to walk down and up two flights of stairs to make a cup of tea or heat our dinners up. So, our board of directors decided that adding some of the essentials upstairs would be worthwhile. Adderstone Group were very much on board with us making this big change, which we really appreciated.
Our work can involve a lot of client calls, meetings, and brain storming sessions, so we knew we wanted a number of spaces where people could get together and exchange ideas. In our previous office, we only had the one meeting room but, here, we have a boardroom for more formal occasions and three meeting rooms where people can take calls or work in smaller groups. Plus, there's our staff room, where larger groups can get together to collaborate on a campaign or idea. It even has a whiteboard wall our staff can use to make a note of anything they want to come back to.
Our move to this office has been a very positive one, and we've really enjoyed putting our own stamp on the space. There's still room for us to grow, and we love the location, so are sure we'll be based in Ouseburn for a long while yet.
