I spent my year as a placement student working for Taemar Construction on behalf of Adderstone Group and what an eye-opening experience it has proved to be. It really has furthered my development and understanding of how the construction industry operates.
From being thrown into the deep-end to manage the Baker’s Yard project on site in Gosforth and briefly conversion works for The Confectionary Store, one of the buildings on site, to now being an assistant to the Director, completing minor projects and dealing with multiple roles and responsibilities on major commercial projects it’s fair to say I’ve rarely been bored!
Going into the role I was keen to be challenged and given a number of responsibilities to further my development and this role certainly fulfilled my desire. With so many various types of projects, ranging from 4-digit sums to 7-digit sums, the diversity of these new build projects and refurbishments has significantly helped further my understanding in the construction industry. Tasks have varied from placing material and subcontract orders to managing my own projects from start to completion and much, much more.
If someone was to ask me what my placement experience was like I’d ask them how much time they have! No day was ever the same. I personally prefer this style of learning; it’s much better receiving on the job experience as opposed to being situated in a classroom.
Waking up before 7am is enough of a sign to dictate that you are becoming an adult. If a student was to ask me if they believe an industrial placement was worthwhile then I would insist 100% yes! Being able to put my theory into practice whilst receiving a broad understanding from my first two years at Northumbria University has helped my learning dramatically. I am confident that this greater appreciation of the construction industry will prove indispensable in my final year of academic studies.
Overall my experience has been nothing short of positive, the amount of responsibility I’ve received has helped me mature as a person, I’m no longer a shy young lad and I’ve certainly been brought out of my shell and the main thing is that if the opportunity arose to make myself a better person again I’d grab it by the horns.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone at Adderstone Group and I wish everyone the best in the future.
Over and out.
