Passion
For many visually impaired athletes, opportunities to compete in organised sport can be limited. Tennis has adapted in creative ways to make competition possible- using audible balls, additional bounces and modified courts so players can track the game through sound and movement rather than sight.
But access to competition is just as important as access to the sport itself. Regional tournaments give players the chance to test their skills, build confidence and experience the thrill of competitive play that sighted athletes often take for granted.
Action
In September 2013, the Adderstone Foundation sponsored the Blind and Visually Impaired Regional Tennis Tournament as part of its ongoing partnership with the club, supporting players from across the North East and strengthening the development of the North East Visually Impaired Tennis Club.
The event formed part of a wider series of disability tennis competitions that allow players to progress through regional events towards national championships.
Impact
For many participants, the tournament represented their first experience of competitive tennis. The event helped raise the profile of visually impaired tennis in the region while giving players the opportunity to measure their progress against competitors from across the country.
The success of events like this helped NEVITC and its players move closer to national competition- a major milestone recognised within the sport’s development.
