When families are forced to flee war, the immediate danger may be behind them, but rebuilding everyday life can be an enormous challenge. Arriving in a new country often means facing unfamiliar systems, language barriers and the uncertainty of starting again from nothing.
For many displaced families, having a safe place to stay and people willing to help them navigate those first months can make the difference between uncertainty and stability.
Action
In 2022, Adderstone Founder, Ian Baggett, and his family opened their home to a Ukrainian family who had been forced to leave their country following the outbreak of war.
During their stay in Newcastle, the Baggetts helped the family adjust to life in the UK supporting them as they developed their English language skills, introduced them to the local area and helped them navigate everyday practicalities such as schools, services and employment.
Impact
With this support, the family were able to settle into the community and begin planning for their future. They later moved into their own accommodation and secured employment, allowing them to establish independence and stability after the upheaval of displacement.
