Passion
Every child deserves the chance to play, belong, and feel part of a team. But for many young people in Zambia, a lack of basic sports kit can be a real barrier to getting involved.
Action
Through our partnership with Sport in Action, we launched a North East-wide donation drive- placing collection drums at universities including Northumbria, Newcastle and Durham. Students and staff donated hundreds of items of sports kit, from trainers to teamwear, giving pre-loved equipment a powerful second life.
Durham University students also played a hands-on role, helping to sort and pack over 500 pairs of trainers and sports kit ready for shipment.
Impact
The kit is now being distributed across community sports hubs in Lusaka, reaching thousands of children and young people. For many, this is the first time they’ve owned proper sports gear- something as simple as a pair of boots or a team shirt can transform confidence and create a sense of belonging.
Beyond the equipment itself, the impact runs deeper. These programmes provide safe, structured spaces where young people- especially girls- can grow, build confidence and stay connected to positive opportunities, even in the face of challenges like poverty and inequality.
What started as unused kit in the UK is now helping young athletes in Zambia step onto the pitch with pride, purpose and possibility.
