Quay West Business Village

Quay West Business Village is an award-winning 100,000 sq. ft. business park on the site of the famous former Austin & Pickersgill shipyard on the banks of Sunderland's River Wear.

The site on which Quay West Business Village is located is steeped in heritage. Originally acquired by Austin & Pickersgill in 1845, it became one of the most prominent shipyards in the North East in the 1800s and 1900s.

Austin & Pickersgill were famed for their ship-building acumen, the company designed and built the famous SD14 and the launch of 14,000 tonne freighters became commonplace at the yard, many of which are still in service around the world today.

The 1980s however saw the death of the region’s shipbuilding industry and the site fell into disrepair. Despite the challenges faced by redeveloping the land, Adderstone Group was undeterred and visualised that this could be the location of Sunderland’s first out-of-town business park in more than 25 years.

Adderstone Group adopted a collaborative approach to the development, working with its funders Allied Irish Bank and building contractor, Brims Construction to create a commercially attractive addition to the urban landscape along Sunderland riverside.

The venture, which began in 2007 and was completed in 2010, was high risk for Adderstone Group at the beginning of what would prove to be one of the country’s worst ever recessions. However, many noted the efforts of Adderstone Group, including RICS, who awarded Quay West ‘Highly Commended’ status at their 2010 Renaissance Awards.

Quay West Business Village is a 100,000 sq. ft. premium office and retail space offering a number of high quality offices in a range of sizes, hosting a range of local, national and international businesses. The site is always brimming with activity from its premium, picturesque location on the banks of the River Wear.

The team behind Quay West at Adderstone Group is delighted to have contributed to the significant regeneration of this once thriving Sunderland shipyard, enabling the city celebrate its former glory.

As well as offering a range of high-quality office space to rent or purchase, there remains a small number of significant development opportunities on the site for commercial occupiers looking to create their own bespoke space, whether it be an office, commercial or industrial scheme.

These opportunities range from 950 sq. metres to 1700 sq. metres of land and would be the ideal location for a national firm to establish a local presence, close to strong commercial operators and a high number of residential homes, or as an impressive local office HQ with great access to the city centre and key local landmarks.
