Between 2016 and 2018 Adderstone Group's construction division completed the construction of two new stores and sensitively refurbish another for supermarket giant Lidl.

In a move away from development for Adderstone Group’s own portfolio, from 2016 to 2018, the Group’s construction specialists, known as Taemar Construction at the time, before being brought back under the Adderstone Group banner in 2019, partnered with the German international discount supermarket chain Lidl, to develop two new stores and refurbish another.

The Lidl portfolio included the development of a brand new 26,600 sq. ft ‘Lidl of the Future store on Cowpen Road in Blyth and 26,000 sq. ft store on Comet Row Killingworth, North Tyneside.

Both stores were created to replace outdated stores on nearby sites and were delivered on a turnkey basis for the client.

The state-of-the-art stores were designed with efficiency in mind, streamlined processes to maximize efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The buildings reduced the CO² emission rate by over 20% compared to a building of the same type, size and use, which amounts to circa 40 tonnes of CO² per year – or the equivalent of flying a jumbo jet over 700 miles!

The fully glass fronted façades were designed to maximize natural daylight entering the buildings, whilst sensor controlled exterior sun blinds automatically operate to mitigate the effects of unwanted heat from solar gain.

The third project in the portfolio was the conversion of a former Co-op store located on Queens Road in Richmond. The project was a sensitive refurbishment in light of the store being located in a conservation area in the town.

Each of the Lidl properties in the portfolio; Killingworth, Blyth and Richmond respectively, were situated close to heavily residential areas and key traffic routes.
