Adderstone Group’s construction and facilities management specialists, Taemar Ltd have completed their first contract with supermarket giant Lidl, a brand new store in Blyth, Northumberland.
The Blyth store, which opened to the public a few days ago, has been created using cutting edge design in line with the “Lidl of the Future” scheme which the supermarket are applying to all of their new store projects.
The total store layout is 2470m², including a sales area of 1424m². There are 134 car parking spaces including seven spaces for disabled users as well as dedicated parent and child parking areas.
Taemar Ltd, formerly known as Adderstone Construction Ltd and a subsidiary of Adderstone Group, have completed the store in advance of the planned pre-Christmas opening which is their largest turnkey project to date. The company are also working on another Lidl store which is due to open in spring 2017 in Killingworth.
The state of the art Blyth store, which is located on Cowpen Road, also aims to streamline processes, maximize efficiency and reduce its environmental impact. The building reduces the CO² emission rate by over 20% when compared with a building of the same type, size and use. This is circa 40 tonnes of CO² per year, which is equivalent to flying a jumbo jet over 700 miles. The fully glass fronted façade maximises natural daylight entering the building, whilst sensor controlled exterior sun blinds automatically operate to mitigate the effects of unwanted heat from solar gain.
The project, which began in May 2016, has created over 200 construction jobs throughout its duration, with subcontract work being included in the package and 20 additional new permanent jobs created at the Lidl branch on top of those who had transferred from the old branch.
The new store is a replacement for Lidl’s previous store on Albion Retail Park. This new building on a larger site has allowed them to almost double the size of the supermarket in Blyth, allowing for a wider range of products and facilities, as well as enhanced storage and delivery areas.
Kevin Patrick, Managing Director of Taemar Limited said: “It has been a pleasure to work closely with Lidl to construct this new store. This has been a significant project for Taemar and we have been delighted that well over 75 per cent of labour personnel has come from the local area, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
“Delivery of this development is further proof of Taemar’s ambitions to grow and develop even further in the coming years.”
Steve Higham, Lidl Area Manager commented: “We’re thoroughly delighted to be in a position to welcome the people of Blyth to this new and improved store. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support, and hope they enjoy our fresh, quality, great value products which are now even more readily available.”
